Remembering the past: Bangladeshi fighters for Palestine of the 1980s
By Yaza al-Saadi, Al-Akhbar
A photograph and a grave. These are two relics of a time, now mostly forgotten, of when thousands of Bangladeshis came to Lebanon in the 1980s as volunteers and fighters for the Palestinian cause. They were no less important in the struggle for Palestinian liberation than others, and their stories deserve to be remembered.

Growing food instead of lawns is good, but can we PLEASE stop with the condescending bullshit that implies that people who choose to grow lawns must only being doing it for shallow ‘sheepish’ reasons?
Maybe instead of snidely saying ‘trying to impress your neighbors?’ give people instructions on how to work with and/or fight their home owner’s association, how to appeal to a landlord, how to address local ordinances, and how to grow stealth food crops as ornamental plants in areas where food gardening is banned. Seriously, they will come bulldoze your shit and then bill you for it.
We need more posts instructing people how to guerrilla garden and found community gardens, and fewer posts saying ‘You only have a lawn because you’re shallow and vain and stupid!’

There is always a lawn alternative. Always!

Really solid commentary from moniquill: you would be surprised in a lot of areas how much architectural controls and zoning ordinances limit what you can do with your own land, or land you rent.
There is also the omnipresent issue of soil quality and contamination of residential lots, which usually means folks have to so a lot of soil building and sheet mulching before this kind of thing is possible.
That said, my favourite stealth perennial food crop is the sunchoke: these towering sunflower-like blossoms produce edible, nutritious tubers year-round!

I don’t know if you guys have seen this or if anyone has posted it but I really wanted to share this because I am so disgusted; sign the petition here!!!!!!! Full story below:

On June 23, 2012 Darren Rainey, a 50-year-old mentally ill state prison inmate in Miami-Dade County, died after guards responded to his defecating in his cell by locking him into a 180-degree shower for two hours—at which point his skin was separating from his body. Local police, and the state, failed to properly investigate. The case was only brought to light in recent months by The Miami Herald. After two years, no one has been held criminally accountable, or even charged.
Darren was serving a two-year sentence for drug possession and housed in a psychiatric unit. After his death, guards forced another prisoner, Mark Joiner, to clean up the shower where Darren died, including chunks of skin.
"He was crying, please stop, please stop, Joiner said. And they just said "Enjoy your shower, and left."
Only the U.S. Department of Justice can properly investigate this terrible crime, and a broader culture of abuse in Florida’s prisons that has led to other unnecessary deaths, and which falls especially hard on the mentally ill.

THIS PETITION NEEDS ALMOST 50,000 MORE SIGNATURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Racism in France: Attacks on French Morocco-born minister spark debate
“Provocation”, “a Moroccan Muslim”, “an Ayatollah”: the appointment of a young Morocco-born woman as France’s education minister has sparked a wave of attacks that has renewed concerns about racism in the country.
Najat Vallaud-Belkacem is one of the brightest lights in President Francois Hollande’s deeply unpopular government.
The 36-year-old telegenic Hollande protegee was appointed last month as the country’s first-ever female education minister, the latest step in a prodigious political career.
But her appointment was greeted with a volley of complaints from the far-right, with its weekly mouthpiece Minute describing the appointment of “a Moroccan Muslim” as a “provocation”.
Another right-wing publication, Valeurs Actuelles, described her as the new “Ayatollah” at the education ministry.
And the latest controversy: over the weekend, a false letter circulated on Twitter, purportedly from the minister, encouraging town halls to introduce an hour of Arabic-language class in schools.

A Texas man is under arrest after gunning down a SWAT team member as the officer quietly tried to climb in through the apartment’s window during predawn hours.
Police State USAreports  that a resident fatally shot Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie as the officer climbed in through a ground level window as part of a “no knock” raid. The officers were there due to suspicion that residents were in possession of controlled substances.
Upon hearing a noise, resident Marvin Louis Guy, 50, opened fire on the unidentified officers, shooting three others as well, although only one fatally.
Guy is currently being held on capital murder charges in connection with Dinwiddie’s death, even though it’s unclear how Guy was supposed to know that the men crawling in through the window were police officers since they hadn’t identified themselves.
The evidence sheet lists a laptop, a safe, a pistol, and a glass pipe, but no drugs were found. Given the evidence, why did police deem it necessary to seek a “no knock” warrant and why did a judge sign off on it?
Very little is known about Mr. Guy, but Dinwiddie left behind two children, all because his SWAT team went creeping into a home where the residents didn’t even have any drugs. Is that the best use of law enforcement tax dollars?
Guy’s bond has been set at $3 million dollars.

Thank you lieutenantnorals!

Where’s stand your ground now?????

Texas people!!
Isn’t there a law where it is legal to shoot to kill on your property if there’s a physical threat? Esp if they broke in your home?

BULLSHIT

NO DRUGS IN HIS HOME???? WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RIGHT TO RESIST UNLAWFUL ARREST?
